Getting music-lovers into the mood over the May-June weekend, Sydney-based quartet Pirra will be bringing their illustrious indie-pop grooves to the North for two massive nights of fun. Self-described as ‘computer nerd meets guitar trio with slinky vocalist at the front’, Pirra have been making musical waves across the national and international scene since their inception. With their latest single Once heating up the airwaves on a commercial and independent level, this foursome is one of the hottest bands on the scene today.
The year that was 2018 was an incredible one for the band, which features Jess Beck on vocals, James McKendry on guitars, and twin brothers Curtis and Jeffrey Argent on bass and drums respectively. They brought the year to a close with a sold-out New Year’s Eve show on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales. It wrapped up a string of boutique festival appearances, as well as coveted support slots.
Their single Rabbit Hole – from the five-track EP of the same name – hit the airwaves in September and peaked in the Top 10 of the AMRAP Metro Charts, as well as garnering airplay on Double J and Triple J. Pirra turned heads at their debut showcase at revered music industry conference BIGSOUND, and earned both acclaimed from fans and industry peers – an experience which had put them in a solid direction for international supports and songwriting collaborations in 2019.
Pirra are a band who know what they want and destined to get it. The name itself means ‘moon’ in Luritja, an ode to lead singer Jess’ Luritja heritage. It came at the suggestion of long-time musical friend Sammy Butcher (Warumpi Band, Tjupi Band) and fit the foursome perfectly. Jess – a solo-artist within her own right and the 2017 PDA recipient – has found her soulmates with James, Curtis and Jeffrey in Pirra. The band are currently working on their sophomore release, due out this year.
