For almost a decade SOUNDS BY THE RIVER has been smashing records with its revered concert bringing some of the biggest names in Australian music to Mary Ann Reserve in Mannum. After a sell-out show in the summer of 2016, the iconic festival is back in 2017 with another stellar bill. The 2017 SOUNDS BY THE RIVER will be headlined by the legendary John Farnham with special guests James Reyne, Daryl Braithwaite, Shannon Noll and Taxiride.
SOUNDS BY THE RIVER promoter Duane McDonald says the 2017 festival will continue to promote some of the best Australian music on the scene today. “We have been proud to present some fantastic line-ups for SOUNDS BY THE RIVER over the years,” he says. “This year the bill features some of the biggest names in the business. The 2017 show will rock the socks off of music fans.”
There is no doubt about it, John Farnham is the voice of the Australian music industry. Revered as one of the best male vocalists – by both fans and fellow musicians – he has had an incredibly versatile career. He took the hearts of the nation with his debut release as Johnny Farnham in 1967. Fast forward to the 1980s and John Farnham become one of Australia’s favourite sons with an incredible string of smash hit albums. His return to the industry – the 1986 album Whispering Jack – was the first record to sell over a million copies in Australia and its chart topping single You’re The Voice cemented the honey toned solo artist as the ‘voice’ of the country. Over the next several years he released hit after hit, including Pressure Down, Reasons, A Touch of Paradise, Age of Reason, Two Strong Hearts, Angels, Talk of The Town, Chain Reaction, Burn For You, Have A Little Faith (In Us) and That’s Freedom to name a few, including some incredible covers which he made his own, such as When The War Is Over and One. Since the 1980s, he has been selling out stadiums, always incredibly in demand for his live shows. Headlining SOUNDS BY THE RIVER, John Farnham will be showcasing a repertoire than spans almost five decades and that promises to be an unforgettable experience.
James Reyne has been treading the boards in the rock halls of Australian music for decades. From his time fronting the legendary Australian Crawl through to his successful solo career, James’ music is part of Australian history. As a prolific songwriter and strong vocalist, it’s no surprise that James has won accolade after accolade for his contribution to music. When Australian Crawl split in the mid-1980s, James embarked on a successful solo career.
When it comes to recognisable voices in the Australian music scene, there are few as impressive as that of Daryl Braithwaite. In a diverse career that has spanned decades, Daryl’s consistency as a performer has never wavered, something that sees him performing regularly to packed crowds around the country. Starting his career in the 1970s as the frontman for Sherbet, Daryl was crowned King of Pop and the band produced 20 national Top 40 singles. In the 1980’s Daryl set out on his own solo career, releasing smash hit singles such as One Summer, As The Days Go By and The Horses to name a few.
Ross Wilson is another artist who needs no introduction to music lovers. As the force behind bands such as Mondo Rock and Daddy Cool, he has been twice inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Known as ‘Mr Eagle Rock’, the Daddy Cool classic Eagle Rock is one of the biggest rock hits to come out of Australia. Wilson has also had success as a solo artist and a prolific career as a songwriter, penning tracks that have been covered by the likes of Jimmy Barnes, DEF-FX, Custard, Troy Cassar-Daley, Christine Anu and Lee Kernaghan to name a few.
With ten consecutive Top 10 singles in the charts, it’s fair to say that Shannon Noll has earned his place in the Aussie rock industry. The country boy first came to prominence thanks to his stand-out performances on the first series of television talent show Australian Idol. He has been nominated for several ARIA awards and has won the Best Male Artist accolade at the MTV awards three years in succession.
The multi-award winning Taxiride are a force to be reckoned with. The band smashed onto the Australian music scene in the early 2000s and rapidly became a household name. With Top 5 ARIA platinum selling albums, six Top 40 ARIA singles and a plethora of rave reviews, the band toured massively throughout not only Australia, but also North America, Europe and Asia. Their hits, such as Get Set, Everywhere You Go, Creepin’ Up Slowly, Oh Yeah and You Gotta Help Me, have become ingrained in the Australian psyche.
SOUNDS BY THE RIVER always sells out well in advance, and year after year it has been proven to be one of the best value for money concert experiences in Australia. Music fans are encouraged to get in early to secure tickets so they don’t miss out as one of the biggest line-ups of Australian music royalty share the same stage.
